STEVEN DALE MERCER

September 12, 1976 - November 10, 2024

Steven Dale Mercer joined his father in heaven on Sunday November 10, 2024, after a long difficult battle with cancer. He was surrounded with love and his family.

Steven Mercer was born September 12, 1976 in Webster, Texas to William Dale and Karen Dedek Mercer. He was their first child. Steven grew up in Alvin and attended Alvin Schools. He played little league baseball as a child and was always fascinated by cars and any other motorized vehicles. (Just like his father) In high school, Steven was Varsity football co-equipment manager, along side his cousin John Mercer Jr. He also filmed all the Yellowjacket games from the press box. Steven was a marketing student in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) and was employed by Blue Bell Ice Cream his junior and senior year. He participated in District competitions during both years. Also, during high school, Steven crashed into Alvin’s famous baseball player’s fence and had to go knock on the door to tell them. He learned a lot about speed and humility that day.

After graduation from Alvin High School, Class of 1995, Steven remained an employee of Blue Bell and was a full time loader. Soon he was promoted to Route Driver and the long career at Blue Bell took off. Steven also joined the Alvin Volunteer Fire Dept. at this time. He worked fires on his days and nights off from BlueBell.

February 13, 1999, Steven married his high school sweetheart, Jena Lea. They made their first home in Alvin. On March 25, 2000. Jena gave birth to a son Steven Dale Mercer II. He was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2 lbs. 7 oz. 21” long. He was one

of the smallest babies at the Women’s hospital at the time. Almost 3 years later, Pierce Mercer was born, at 34 weeks 6lbs. 7 oz. 191/2” and healthy.

Soon the boys were old enough to start in sports. Steven was a great coach and advocate for them no matter what they chose to do. Steven II was in to gaming and was a member of a club after school. Pierce started riding BMX bikes and racing. In 2011, Steven wanted a change of scenery so Blue Bell sent him to Colorado to be a Route Supervisor. The family loved the area and enjoyed cold weather sports for a while, but they became homesick for Texas so Blue Bell sent him to Longview, Texas in 2015, to be the shipping manager there.

When they moved back to Texas, Jena got a job and soon after began suffering debilitating headaches and other health problems. Steven was her rock and support through out the entire process. After several years, she was relieved from the symptoms and able to get a new job that was less stressful.

The boys were growing up and Pierce’s need for speed really took off. They began BMX racing at Cargill Park BMX track.

The whole family traveled to Arizona, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Alabama for these races. Steven was the Team Manager for “Poppawillie” racing team. He was hands-on while teaching Pierce about bikes and helping him to improve his skills on the track.

The boys attended PineTree High School. Steven II was still active in his gaming community and Pierce played football from 7th -12th grade and baseball his last year, for the Pirates. Steven was at every event he could possibly attend to support his boys.

Last December 2023, Steven was diagnosed with brain cancer. His long battle began as his body, and his Cancer team at

Memorial Hermann (Medical Center) fought off tumors in his head, throat and eventually his spine.

Steven is preceded in death by his father, William (Bill) Dale Mercer, his maternal grandparents, Rosamae and Thomas Dedek and paternal grandparents, James and Patricia Mercer.

Steven is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jena Lea Mercer; his sons Steven II and Pierce, all of Longview; his mother and stepdad, Karen and Carl Hoffman of Alvin; his brother Brad Mercer of Dickinson; and his sister Allison Hoffman of Webster. There are so many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews and friends who love Steven, too many to mention by name.

Steven Mercer was a quiet, friendly funny guy and his smile put everyone at ease. He was always willing to step in and help wherever it was needed. He worked hard for his family and worked hard at playing. Many memories will be held close to our hearts, and his big, giant bear hugs will be missed. JPND

A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at First Methodist Church in Alvin, Texas, with a memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM.
